Submerged Bugatti Veyron

Crashed-Bugatti

Last Wednesday was a dark day for the automotive world. Andy House, of Lufkin, Texas, destroyed one of the finest cars on this planet. He drove his newly acquired and insured Bugatti Veyron into a salt water lagoon. Poor old Andy claims a low flying pelican distracted him, causing him to drop his mobile phone, and in bending down to retrieve it he ran off the road. Coincidentally he happens to be the owner of Performance Auto Sales, a company that specialises in restoring wrecked exotic cars.

I’d like to give Mr House the benefit of the doubt, but the words ‘huge insurance scam’ do spring to mind. On the other hand, he could actually be stupid enough to be driving a million dollar hypercar while holding a phone, and seems to be entirely capable of plumbing the depths of idiocy required to make the decision to bend down and grope about looking for said phone while driving. On a highway. Next to a lake.

Fair warning: The guy filming this is about as stupid as the driver of the Veyron.

How NOT to submerge your Veyron

The first thing that sprung to my mind when watching this footage was Cannonball Fever (also known as Speed Zone). Aside from being one of the best car movies of all time, its opening minutes contain the perfect solution for this situation and may help other supercar drivers in a similar predicament to Andy House.

So the next time you’re faced with a large body of water in front of you, just floor it.

(It’s well worth watching the whole thing, but if you’re short on time, just skip to the last 40 seconds)
