De Tomaso going cheap, but no takers
Documents filed with the Italian courts reveal that De Tomaso is struggling to find a buyer. In receivership since 2004, an auction was held last year but the reserve price of €1.78millionwas not met. Once again this week the Clerk of Modena, Monica Rossi, called for bids on the rights to the brands trademark, designs and an incomplete chassis (most likely a Guarà). Though several parties expressed interest, no bids for the new reserve of €1.6 million were received. The liquidator is now expected to make a decision on the future of the company.

I have to say I’m surprised that there were no takers for such a famous brand. The price is so low, and there’s some great automotive history attached to the De Tomaso name. Plenty of other manufacturers seem to be doing well by redesigning their past (Chevy Camaro, Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger to name a few) surely there’s a market for a modern day take on the Pantera?
One talented German designer, Stefan Schulze, has already thought about it and has come up with a ‘Panthera’ Concept, based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform:
